Robot Teacher Makes Debut in Japan
In what could be a harbinger of the future, elementary-school students in Tokyo are being taught by a robot.
Saya is the result of 15 years of research and is being tested as a teacher after working as a receptionist.
She — or it — is multilingual, can organize set tasks for pupils, call the roll and get angry when the kids misbehave.
Saya is just one example of Japan’s determination to put a robot in every home by 2015.
The robot was originally developed for companies who want to cut costs by replacing office workers such as secretaries and receptionists with an android that had a range of human expressions
Space probe returns to Earth from trip to asteroid
A team of eager scientists flew into the Australian Outback on Monday to recover a Japanese space capsule they hope contains the first-ever asteroid samples that could provide clues into the evolution of the solar system.
The Hayabusa explorer returned to Earth overnight after a seven- ear, 4-billion mile (6-billion kilometer) journey, burning apart on re-entry in a spectacular fireball just after jettisoning the capsule. It was the first time a spacecraft successfully landed on an asteroid and returned to Earth.
Seiichi Sakamoto of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, which launched the explorer in 2003, said they were "delighted" to recover the capsule, particularly after a number of technical problems delayed Hayabusa's arrival for three years.
"It was an extremely difficult technological challenge, and we did everything to overcome the troubles one by one," he said. "This is an achievement we could make simply because we never gave up hope."
Moon has 100 times more water than previously thought
Moon has hundred times more water than was previously thought, and it could be widespread deep under its surface, planetary scientists have claimed.
A US-led team has found that there is at least 100 times more water in the Moon's minerals that was previously believed -- in fact, the scientists have based its findings on an analysis of the mineral apatite in lunar rocks picked up by Apollo space missions and in lunar meteorite found in Africa.
"Water may be ubiquitous within the lunar interior," the planetary scientists wrote in the 'Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences' journal.
"For over 40 years we thought the Moon was dry. We found that the minimum water content ranged from 64 parts per billion to 5 parts per million -- at least two orders of magnitude greater than previous results.
"Or another way of looking at it -- if you took all of the water that was locked up inside the rocks of the Moon and put them on the surface, it would make a metre-thick layer covering the Moon," Francis McCubbin of Carnegie Institution of Washington, who led the team, said.
Hints of life found on Saturn's moon Titan?
Astronomers claim to have found hints of life on Saturn's moon Titan which is much too cold to support even liquid water on its surface.
According to the 'New Scientist', the two potential signatures of life on Titan were found by Cassini spacecraft, but scientists have pointed out that non-biological chemical reactions could also be behind the observations.
Still many feel that exotic life-forms could live in the lakes of liquid methane or ethane that dot the moon's surface and that such microbes could eke out an existence by breathing in hydrogen gas and eating the organic molecule acetylene, creating methane in the process.
This would result in a lack of acetylene on Titan and a depletion of hydrogen close to the moon's surface, where the microbes would live, according to the scientists.
Now, measurements from the Cassini spacecraft have borne out these predictions, hinting that life may be present.
Here's your chance to get your face in space
Always wanted to fly in space? Now at least your photo can reach orbit.
NASA is inviting the public to send their portrait into space aboard one of the two remaining space shuttle flights. To participate, upload your picture to a NASA website: http://faceinspace.nasa.gov
You can select which space shuttle to fly - Discovery in September or Endeavor, targeted for November. You can also just fly your name, without a photo.
After the flight, participants can download a special certificate.
A map on the website keeps track of submissions. By Tuesday afternoon, some 27,000 people worldwide had entered their photos - more than 10,000 in the U.S., 500 in Spain and one in Cambodia.
Doctors to warn against using phones in cars
"It's time for us to ask patients about driving and distraction," Dr. Amy Ship of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston wrote in a featured commentary in the journal.
Hours before the journal was published, the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, approved the Distracted Driving Prevention Act, which would provide incentives to states with distracted driving regulations.
"It's a proven fact that distracted driving causes thousands of deaths and injuries every year," said New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg, who co-sponsored the legislation.
